Herald Coaster, Monday, March 25, 1996 James L. Boone, Sr., 97, of Bryan, and formerly of Richmond, died Friday, March 22, 1996 at his residence in Bryan. He was born October 15, 1898, in Carlisle, Ark., but spent most of his early years on a farm near Alief. After farming for several years, he became a teacher and school administrator at Alief, Beasley, Lolita and Needville, until his retirement in 1961. He will be remembered for having attained full accreditation for each school system under his supervision. After his retirement, he devoted the next 30 years of his life to positions of leadership in the Fort Bend County Fair, the Texas Association of Fairs and Expositions, the Fort Bend County Historical Commission, the Fort Bend County Museum Association, the Austin County Retired Teachers Association, the Sons of the American Revolution, Lions International, and the Boy Scouts of America. He was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Bryan, the Sul Ross Lodge No. 1300, Sugar Land Lodge No. 1141, A.F. & A.M., the Bryan Chatper of the Order of the Eastern Star, the Sons of the American Revolution, the Sul Ross Camp #1457 Sons of Confederate Veterans, and the Brazos County and Texas Retired Teachers Association. Mr. Boone has been a Mason for 74 years, and was a member of all York Rite Masonic bodies and the Shrine. His offices included Past Master of Sugar Land Lodge No. 1141; District Deputy Grand Master, Grand Lodge of Texas; High Priest of Richmond Chapter No. 467; R.A.M.; Illustrious Master of Richmond Council No. 383; R & S.H.; Commander of Bay City Commandery No. 74; Knights Templar; and past patron of the Rosenberg Chapter No. 429, Order of the Eastern Star. He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and five brothers. Survivors include his wife, Mora Waddell Boone; two sons and daughters-in-law, James L. Jr. and Lillian Vorpahl Boone of College Station, and H.S. (Dan) and Margaret Benbow Boone of Houston; five grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren. Funeral Services were held at 2 p.m. Monday, March 25, 1996 at Davis Greenlawn Cemetery Chapel, (FM 2218 and Hwy 59), in Rosenberg. Rev. Bob Richers, First United Methodist Church of Bryan, officiated. Mason grave rites followed in Greenlawn Memorial Park. Visitation was held on Sunday, March 24, from 3 to 5 p.m. at Callaway-Jones Funeral Home in Bryan. Memorials may be made to a church or charity of one's choice, Burial services were under the direction of Davis-Greenlawn Funeral Home, Rosenberg.
